Startup Crush
Startup Crush is a modern match-3 puzzle game where players match startup resources like Code, Design, Marketing, Sales, and Funding to grow a company from a student project into a unicorn startup. Combining addictive puzzle mechanics with business progression, players unlock features, scale their startup, and build their entrepreneurial empire through strategic gameplay.

The Challenge
Building a modern match-3 game that could stand out in a highly competitive puzzle game market dominated by established titles. The challenge was to create a unique gameplay experience that goes beyond traditional candy-matching mechanics while maintaining the simplicity, accessibility, and addictive nature that make match-3 games successful.
Additional challenges included designing engaging progression systems, balancing puzzle difficulty across multiple levels, implementing smooth cascading and special-tile mechanics, creating an intuitive mobile-first user experience, and integrating startup-building elements in a way that feels meaningful rather than just a visual theme.
The Solution
To address the lack of innovation in traditional match-3 games, we developed Startup Crush, a startup-themed puzzle game that combines classic match-3 mechanics with business growth and progression. Players match resources such as Code, Design, Marketing, Sales, and Funding to build products, unlock milestones, and grow their startup from a student project into a unicorn company.
The game introduces meaningful progression through level objectives, special power-ups, startup-themed resources, and an evolving company journey. By combining engaging puzzle gameplay with entrepreneurial storytelling and achievement-based progression, Startup Crush delivers a unique experience that keeps players motivated beyond simply completing levels.
The Implementation
- Conducted research on modern match-3 games and analyzed market-leading puzzle mechanics.
- Designed the Startup Crush concept by combining match-3 gameplay with startup-building progression.
- Planned the game architecture using Phaser 3, TypeScript, and a modular system design.
- Developed the core 8×8 match-3 board with tile swapping, matching, and cascading mechanics.
